Passive Reflections

As you will probably guess from the title of the blog and well, the whole blog in general :0), I absolutely LOVE hippies and teh 1960s. Anyway the other day I was arguing with my brother which is not an uncommon activity for me; he's 13, you do the math. I guess it doesn't really help that we both have very strong Irish tempers. ;) So we were arguing and I punched him lightly on the shoulder and he acted as if he'd just been brutally mugged. He was like, "you are so violent". I started thinking. So many people out in the world pray or wish or hope for peace, but thoughts are not actions. I want peace but what do I do to further it? Hippies are awesome and I consider myself one, but my dad made a good point......it's not like I can call myself a hippie and then only live up to parts of the mantra. I realized that I really should keep my temper under control. I have decided to try and keep hold of my temper as much as is possible. I'm going to try and stop picking fights with my brother and live a more peaceful life. I really want to start yoga and meditaion....both of which I hope will make me more even tempered.  Live in peace and love my lovelies!

Woodstock 2009

There is going to be a 40th anniversary concert in Bethel and I really wish I could go!!! It's not a huge festival...it's just a simple conmcert, but it would still be awesome to go to the place where the world-shaking weekend took place and celebrate it's fortieth birthday with thousands of other music lovers. I think that it would be an honor to hear some of the original acts. i wish that it was a bigger deal and that it was still the Hippie to-do that it was. I would have been ecstatic to spend three days spreading peace and love, listening to amazing music, and having so much fun with fellow war despising, peace loving Hippies! I sincerely wish that there was a time machine that would allow me to really experience the festival. I would be in my element!

Woodstock 1969

This August is the 40th anniversary and the reminder of this really got me thinking. I discovered the existance of this awesome festival last summer when researching music from the 60s. Since then, the idea of a rock festival with communal living has held my interest. I'm not so enthused about the rampant drugs and all the booze, but I believe that Woodstock would have been an experience that would have impacted my life forever. I love most of the music played there. I especially would have liked to see The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson's Airplane, and many others. I would love to just spend three days with my friends and friends I'd met at the festival and just listen to the music that we all love. That may be an imagined version of events, but I still would have loved to visit this historic event. I really wish there was a time machine that would allow me to experience both the Summer of Love and the Woodstock....without messing up some stupid timeline or another.

Hair

I absolutely love the movie Hair. It is an amazing and pretty realistic view of hippies and their way of life and their beliefs. It also has amazing music! In fact the music is originally what induced me to see the movie. I became aquainted with the music when my mom put "Aquarius" on her cell phone as a ringtone. I was intrigued by it solely becuase it mentioned Aquarius, and I was very interested in the Zodiac calendar. Later on I heard the Fifth Dimension cover of the song on the radio and enjoyed it immensely. After that, I learned that originally the song came from the musical Hair, so I deciced to watch it. I found it on the internet, watched it, and immediately fell in love! The music in it is amazing! I especially like the songs: Hair, I Got Life, Aquarius, Let the Sun Shine In, and Walking in Space. I also love the characters and the storyline. My absolute favorite character is Berger played by Treat Williams; I think he's cute and I love his charcter...the way he acts, what he says, how he smiles :). Anyway, if you haven't seen Hair, then you really have to! Peace!

History Paper

So, yesterday in my World History class I had a fairly good size research paper due. WHy am I writing this here and not on my regular blog? Well, sice we got to decide what topic we wanted our paper to be on, I chose HIPPIES!!! I tried to prove that the Hippie counterculture changed the course of American history forever based on the following arguments:
  • Drug use
  • Music
  • Lifestyle/Ideas

I got tons and I mean tons of information, random facts, and lots of laughs from a book called Hippie by Barry Miles. I personally think that I did pretty well, but that's for my teacher to decide. Although I love and am slightly obssessed with Hippies, right now I don't want to hear let alone write the word hippie, marijuana, rock, LSD, or counterculture for a very long time...oh look, I just did ;)

Peace

P.S. I got a 96% on it! yay! (june15th 2009)

The Concert Was Amazing

OMG! Garfunkel was amazing! I can't believe that I actually saw him preform! He sounded really good and not old at all. He preformed mostly his songs although he did do several SIMON & GARFUNKEL songs including: The Boxer, Bridge Over Troubled Water, For Emily Wherever I May Find Her, and Sounds of Silence. I had hoped that he would sing Mrs. Robinson, but the show was not marred in any way with the absence of this song. I did however discover a new favorite written and sung by Art Garfunkel called Bright Eyes. I immediately fell in love with this song as its haunting notes sung live brought tears to my eyes as no other song had in a very long time. As well as singing, Garfunkel shared some of his writings with us about some of his experiences. He introduced the audience to the fact that he had a three-year old son named Boe(?) and then he sang an exquisite lullaby. I'm so glad that I had the chance to experience the magic of such and amazing voice!

Goodnight all!
PS: Simon and Garfunkel are going to be on tour together later this year!!!

ArT GaRfUnKeL CoNcErT

OMG! OMG! OMG!! This friday Art Garfunkel, formally of Simon and Garfunkel, is coming to my hometown for a concert!!! I know that they were more folk than psychedelic, but folk is still hippie. :) I'M GOING TO SEE ART GARFUNKEL!!!! OMG! OMG! OMG!
I do wish that Simon would preform also, but I'm just amazed at the reality that I'm going to see one of my favorite artists in person. I love their music; my favorite would be a tie between Mrs. Robinson, Sounds of Silence, and The Boxer. Their music speaks to me. It has done for as long as I can remember. :) I love them! Counting down the days until the concert, signing off
